After weeks of lamenting about my lack of knitting, I have finally decided on a new project – my first ever pair of socks! The decision to try an entirely new type of knitting project was partially inspired by teaching a special houseguest how to knit.
As I watched him stay dedicated to the learning process and work through each stitch, I was reminded of the importance of challenging myself, even as a longtime knitter.
Socks, though a favorite of many knitters, has always intimidated me. Perhaps it is the use of double pointed needles (DPNs), all awkwardly pointing in every direction in sock project pics. Or maybe the tiny needle diameter gave me pause. Whatever the ultimate reason, I avoided taking on a sock project as if it were impossible to conquer.
While it can be daunting to learn new techniques (like, how does that heel turn actually work?!), it can also be exciting, especially when you start to see your patience and determination pay off! For now, my goal is to be curious about every step of the process, and I hope to see a finished sock come off the needles in due time. No rush, just a commitment to learn as I go.

Yarn: Yarn Bee Authentic Hand-Dyed Yarn (Color: Market at Malta)
Pattern: Ravelry: Favorite Socks pattern by Kristin Lehrer

I’m planning on using the magic loop method with my Knit Picks Reflection Lace interchangeable needles*, as a way to avoid those pesky DPNs. This set is also the only one that has the appropriate needle sizes in my collection, since most of my other sets begin with a US 3 or US 4 (of course, gauge is still TBD, so needle size is subject to change).
I’ll be casting on soon, so stay tuned for progress! In the meantime, if you have any favorite sock-knitting tips, I’d love to hear them!
