Mantra Knitting

Like most, I carefully choose my knitting projects with key features in mind. Critical traits range from fit to function, but most of all, I choose projects with an emphasis on the knitting process itself. Some projects are designed to challenge me, but I often choose patterns with large sections of circular stockinette stitch (knit every row) for easy meditation.

Recently, I’ve been thinking about the textures that can be created with the simple addition of purl stitches on the right side of the fabric. Equipped with Knitting Stitches cards, I decided to use these textures for some of the gift projects that I have in mind this season.

I started with the Block Quilting stitch pattern, using Rowan Pure Wool Superwash. The bouncy wool shows the stitch detail so beautifully, and I’m really enjoying the simple 12-row pattern. With each repeat, I am able to sink into a flow state. My mind is focused on positive affirmations for the intended recipient instead of making sure I’m on track for a complex pattern.

The resulting fabric feels embossed, and I find myself amazed at how impactful texture from well-placed purls can be. There is so much to learn with knitting, but the basics (knit/purl) are always the cornerstone of our creations.
