This weekend, we visited the local library. In recent years, I have gained a new appreciation for everything that a public library has to offer. At first, my library card was simply a key to digital resources (books, movies, tv shows!) through apps like CloudLibrary, Hoopla, or Libby (depending on the local library’s setup). I rarely visited in person, with the digital connection providing me with all the value I needed… or so I thought.
On this weekend’s trip, I was reminded of the beautiful community space that a local library truly is. As I walked the stacks and toured the maker’s space at our county library, I was inspired in so many ways. To create. To write. To learn. The space was vibrant, filled with ideas and the people exploring them.
I’m thrilled to have found a few books on my two favorite topics – knitting and writing – to bring home. Here’s the haul:
- Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing & Life by Anne Lamott
- Math for Knitters by Kate Atherley
- Light & Breezy Knitwear by Joan Ho
- Yarn Substitution Made Easy by Carol J. Sulcoski
I decided on two books to help up my knitting know-how on knitting math and yarn substitutions. I haven’t started reading either quite yet, but I am hopeful that the concepts will help me navigate making adjustments to existing patterns and maybe even increase my confidence in self-drafting patterns.
Light & Breezy Knitwear has 15 total patterns inside, and well, I want to make more than half! I am certain this is a record for a pattern book! There are cute matching set outfits, like a tee with shorts or a tank with a skirt. There are amazing warm weather staples, including a racerback tank. And, there are cute wardrobe enhancers, like the flirty top on the cover. I hope that the patterns are clear and result in successful projects. My hopes are very high for this one! Stay tuned!
P.S. In between reading Bird by Bird, I did make progress on my Saila Top! I can’t wait to wear this one soon!
