After using AI to knit my last project, I’m excited to return to a tried-and-true pattern from a knitting pattern designer. The inspiration online is endless, and my Instagram feed is filled with beautiful designs from around the world.
I don’t consider myself a particularly trendy knitter. In fact, I find myself almost avoiding trends as they unfold. Perhaps this is because my enneagram type is “the individualist”, but regardless of the cause, I prefer knitting to my own beat. So, when I’m choosing patterns, I’m thinking more about how they work in my closet, how the yarn choice will play out, and what skills/ techniques I might need to learn to be successful.
Project Selection Questions
- How will this item complement my existing handknit wardrobe?
- Is the yarn I have appropriate for this project?
- What techniques are used in the pattern? What will I need to learn?
My latest project is a great addition to my closet in both color (a soft sage called “Dusty Artichoke” from Knitting for Olive) and in style (a simple tank with great layering potential). My gauge swatch felt beautiful with US 4 needles and easily matched the pattern’s gauge requirements. Based on the swatch, I’m so excited to see the final drape and fit.

The pattern (Tip Top Tank by Emily Bolduan) is worked from bottom-up and uses very simple techniques. There are two options for the straps of the tank, a traditional strap and a bow-tied option. I’m leaning toward the romantic bow option, but I’m still deciding. Since I’m currently only just past the split ribbed hem, I have time to decide! What do you think?
